10 Instant Updates

Picture
New shoes. Throw on your oldest tank top and jeans and they’ll look fresh and fabulous with a new pair of heels or flats. Don’t be shy; pick a bold color or pattern. New shoes can do wonders for your man too. An updated shape, like a loafer, looks perfect.

Suspenders or a Bow Tie. For your man, but only if he’s confident enough to wear them!

Picture
Scarf. It’s the easiest (and most inexpensive) way to add a quick pop of color or pattern. Plain T + fresh scarf = effortless perfection.

Tights or Leggings for you. Makes a feminine dress warm and updates your look.

Picture
Coat or Jacket. Brilliant! This season’s crop of coats are colorful and detail-chic. Stay warm during your shoot by wearing a fun jacket.

Flower Pin. Try one on your favorite cardigan or coat.

Tuck it in. Have a pencil skirt? A frilly blouse of some sort? Tuck it in and add a flower to your hair for vintage appeal. More? Add tights or dainty gloves.

Headbands. Don’t be fooled by cheap ones; invest $20 in a winning headband and it will make all the difference.

Props. Another inexpensive idea: fake geeky glasses, a colorful umbrella, vintage gloves, polaroid camera, etc.  Pick two and bring ‘em.

Number One Tip of All Time
Choose your outfits and lay them out. Then replace one or two things with something crazy. A mess of pearls, a bow tie, yellow heels.
We are all usually conservative at first…replacing one or two things with something bold strikes the perfect balance!

(And one more thing...bringing props and wearing bold clothes to a photoshoot may feel a little weird to you

and you may think you're going over the top, but let me tell you, I will just love you for it!
Consider this your permission from me to have fun with your clothes and props!)

Here are just a few outfit ideas I pulled together.
Notice how the clothes coordinate but don't match? That's the key to it all!

Picture
Notice how the girl's coat and guy's argyle sweater have the same color tones? Perfect! That's the ideal version of coordinating with color...NOT matching.  The solid sweater works great too, since the overall feel of the outfit is a stepped up casual.

Picture
This outfit works because one person is in a vivid shade, and the other person is in a neutral. Tip for guys: layering is always wonderful in photos.

Picture
Hello casual, yet still totally cool! Sometimes people are more comfortable with wearing not-so-flashy clothes which is totally fine. But the statement necklace gives "boring solids" new life, as well as the guy's modern v neck t shirt cut. Unifying theme: casual fabrics.

Picture
The unifying theme here is the yellow color, but notice the subtlety! The yellow is limited only to one aspect of the outfits, and is surrounded by more quiet shades of navy and grey, making it the perfect blend. Girls, it's always nice to mix a dress into your outfits for a different look.

Picture
Here's an example of subtle "theme-ing" with a vintage appeal. You'll notice a repeat in the color palate of yellow, grey, and blue like the last outfit...only in a very different look. Nothing really matches, yet it works because of the neutral-ish blues, blacks, and greys mixed with a pop of color and outstanding accessories. If you show up to a shoot dressed like this, I just might love you forever!

Pulling it all together:

Narrow down to three outfits. Try for a cool casual outfit, a more dressed up outfit, and then something just totally fun and different, like a themed outfit if you wish.

And don't stress, because you'll look amazing! :)
